Visiting Galtellì

GALTELLÌ

Galtellì is a medieval village of 2,300 inhabitants in the province of Nuoro.

Lapped by the Cedrino river, the town is located on the slopes of Tuttavista Mountain, which in turn separates it from the sea.

In not too recent times it was very rich in game and therefore a hunting territory for neighboring countries too, until it was established as an environmental protection oasis.

The area was already inhabited in the pre-Nuragic, Nuragic, Punic, Roman and Byzantine periods, due to the presence of numerous domus de janas, nuraghi and other archaeological finds in the area.

During the Middle Ages it belonged to the Giudicato of Gallura and was part of the curatoria of Orosei, of which it was the capital before Orosei itself.

In 1993 the municipality of Galtellì established the literary park named after Grazia Deledda.

Grazia Deledda's novel “Canne al vento” is set among its streets, in which he is mentioned with the name “Galte”.

In fact, a few steps from the former cathedral of San Pietro, it is still possible to visit what was the house where the Sardinian writer stayed.

Castle of Pontes

Built in the 11th century, it is located about 2 kms away from the town centre, on a modest hill overlooking the Cedrino valley, and is covered by thick vegetation that covers the ruins.

Precisely because of its location, the function was clearly military: to defend the southern border of the Giudicato of Gallura.

Its position allowed the surveillance of traffic to and from the Gulf of Orosei and control over an area with a strong agricultural predisposition.

It was built and rebuilt several times to adapt to the continuous and looming military needs against an enemy determined to conquer all of Sardinia.

In fact, history wanted the island to fall into the hands of invaders and so even Galtelli and its castle had to submit to the Aragonese conquest.

Tuttavista Mountain

The mountain, which reaches a height of 806 metres, stands alone on the Cedrino valley and dominates a vast stretch of territory that goes from Senes mount in Irgoli to the mountains of Dorgali.

On its top, over 800 meters above sea level, stands the bronze statue of Christ.

The sculpture is twelve meters high and is a reproduction of the wooden statue of the holy Crucifix housed in the church of the same name in Galtellì. Thanks to its symbolic presence, Tuttavista mount is a pilgrimage destination for those who intend to meditate in an isolated place in contact with nature, along a fascinating path that climbs its slopes.

The mountain stands in Baronia, in the territories of Galtellì, Onifai and Orosei.
