Visiting Irgoli and its places of interest

IRGOLI

Town of Baronia, middle ground between Nuorese and Gallura, in central-eastern Sardinia, with gastronomic traditions, natural and archaeological heritage.

It lies in the Cedrino valley, in a landscape which from 'soft' reliefs, watered by streams and covered in greenery, rises up to the 860 meters of the granite ridges of Senes Mountain.

Irgoli is a center of 2,300 inhabitants, known for excellent quality cured meats and cheeses and craftsmanship with valuable wooden, iron and ceramic artefacts.

The streets of the town are adorned with murales, which tell of agro-pastoral life and musical passion: in August (since 1986) they host the Accordion Festival, an international ethnic festival, and all year round a collection of 120 bellows instruments.

In the parish church of San Nicola, a thorn which appears to belong to the crown of Jesus has been kept in a display case since 1500.

The rites of Holy Week revolve around the precious relic.

Antiquarium - Municipal Archaeological Museum of Irgoli

The Municipal Antiquarium is housed in the old town hall and is divided into two floors.

The exhibition itinerary allows the visitor to closely observe the material evidence that defined the local way of life from the Neolithic (4th millennium BC) to the Middle Ages using explanatory panels, floor plans and iconographic reproductions as support.

The objects on display touch on various aspects of the production activities and the cultural and spiritual sphere of those who created them at the time.

In the structure it will in fact be possible to closely examine various types of tools: objects linked to agricultural work, such as axes, millstones, bronze chisels; vascular forms testifying to the development of ceramic production; objects linked to metallurgical production or domestic activities such as spindle whorls and spools used for weaving, finally finds relating to the spiritual and devotional sphere or to the funerary sphere.

Furthermore, a space has been set up in the museum dedicated to interesting evidence of rock engravings identified in the Irgoli area, in particular in places such as Othierie along the Irgoli-Capo Comino road and in Lucchiddo not far from the Irgoli-Norghio road.

The engravings made on natural metamorphic rock boulders present various associations of signs.

Janna 'e Pruna Nuragic Complex and Su Notante Sacred Source

The nuragic complex is located about 12 kilometers from the town.

The sanctuary, used by the Nuragic people for a long period of time between the 12th century BC until at least the end of the 9th - first half of the 8th century BC, was built along a mountain communication route that connected the Riu Cedrino valley with the Riu Siniscola valley.

A little further downstream, there is the sacred source of Su Notante, built in beautiful isodomic work with carefully squared basalt ashlars. The monument can be placed chronologically between an advanced moment of the Recent Bronze Age and the Final Bronze Age (12th-10th century BC).

The sacred construction finds comparisons with other nuragic structures linked to the cult of water.

San Nicola Church

It was built in 1634 by the Curate of Irgoli, and other important interventions were carried out in the following years.

The architectural style is Roman Gothic.

The exterior has granite steps and a facade with two side niches and a central stained glass window painted in a mosaic style depicting the patron Saint Nicholas. Inside there are three naves.

The altar is made of white marble and behind it is the wooden choir.

It has a small parish museum in which ancient registers, parameters and sacred objects, penitential stones of the confraternities and ancient wooden statues are collected and preserved.
