Visiting Bitti

BITTI

Bitti is 38 kilometers away from Nuoro, in a valley surrounded by the hills of Sant'Elia, Bannitu Mountain and Buon Cammino.

Its municipal territory borders the province of Sassari.

The town, arranged like an amphitheatre, developed around a historic nucleus at the center of which is the church of San Giorgio, and preserves the typical stone buildings.

It is considered an ancient "stone" village in central-northern Sardinia, famous for an archaic song and a precious legacy of the Nuragic civilization.

Romanzesu Nuragic Complex

The nuragic complex of Romanzesu is an archaeological site located in the locality "Poddi Arvu" (the white poplar), in the cork forest of the granite plateau of Sa Serra about 13 kilometers from Bitti, in the province of Nuoro.

It is a nuragic village covering over seven hectares dating back to the Bronze Age, near the source of the Tirso river, and which includes the sacred well, a hundred huts, two megaron temples, a rectangular temple, an elliptical amphitheater steps, and a large labyrinthine structure.

Museum of pastoral and peasant civilization

The visit to the Museum of Pastoral and Rural Civilization offers a precious journey into memory: work tools from times past, the daily needs of shepherds, farmers, artisans and housewives are carefully displayed in the rooms of a house which reproduces the architecture of years remote, characterized by the porch and granite stairs, the wooden floor and ceiling.

The Museum is housed in a secluded corner of the town, in the ancient neighborhood of "Monte Mannu", a few steps from the parish church. A recent restoration intervention has allowed the recovery of the tastes and geometries of the past, worthily brought back to the attention and curiosity of the public.

The collection, the result of donations and loans, is made up of original and lived-in objects, which, according to the skilful arrangement, evoke ancient ways of life and moments of work from a remote everyday life.

BittiRex

The Park offers an exciting journey into Prehistory that accompanies the visitor to discover the gigantic dinosaurs that dominated the Mesozoic Era.

The guided tour is calibrated to the age group of the students.

The student will first be introduced to basic concepts of paleontology, such as fossilisation, stratigraphy and dating methods, with an in-depth look at fossils from Sardinia.

This is then followed by a laboratory activity which consists of the "cast of the fossil", using plaster and plasticine.

The visit continues with the "discovery" of life-size reconstructions of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals and with an in-depth study of some particular aspects including the reconstruction of their appearance in life.

In 2023 it's also possible to visit "BittInsecta", the insects ehibition: an educational itinerary, set up inside a geodesic dome divided into 4 areas, that accompanies the visitor in the observation of the reconstructions of the most beautiful insects in the world, with 25 reproductions up to 200% and with a didactic panel that introduces to entomology and reveals various curiosities about insects.

Lorenzo Possenti, scientist-artist, is the sculptor of the resin models of the insects in the exhibition.
