Visiting Nuoro and its museums

NUORO

Nuoro is a town situated in the heart of Sardinia and it’s the capital of Barbagia. The town stretches for 550 meters above the sea level and it gets a mild climate.

Nuoro is defined the sardinian Athens because many artists and writers passed through it. Among ancient neighborhoods, we count Séuna and Santu Predu, respectively lived by farmers and craftsmen ; pastors and landowners.

The town arises at the foot of Mount Ortobene (high 955 meters), characterized by majestic granitic rocks.

1) Grazia Deledda Museum

It’s situated in the birthplace of the famous writer Grazia Deledda (1871-1936).

You can see manuscripts, photos, personal items and decor in it. Also, a testimony of the writer’s trouble bond with Nuoro, after she moved to Rome.

2) MAN (Museum of Art of the province of Nuoro)

You can see temporary exhibitions in it, exchanging works with other museums and carry on new productions. It proposes exhibitions of artists who worked between the XIX and the XXI century. Also, you can see some works of famous sardinian artists, like: Ciusa, Ballero, Nivola, Maria Lai, etc.

The exhibitions have an international importance. It has a physical accessibility for visitors who have specific needs, didactic-educational laboratories and guide visits.

3) Sardinian Life and Folk Traditions Museum - ISRE

Museum of life and sardinian popular traditions. Open from 1976 , permanently. You can see a representation of the traditional life of the Island; from work to feast, through the testimony of living, dressing, nutrition, religiousness and imaginary of the people. There are more than 5000 items exhibited.

4) Giorgio Asproni National Archaeological Museum

The museum is housed in one of the most important nineteenth-century buildings in the city of Nuoro. The building is in neoclassical style and belonged to the great Sardinian intellectual and politician Giorgio Asproni.

In its interior, there is a rich collection of archaeological and paleontological finds from the entire province, telling the story of the territories of Barbagia and Ogliastra, from their origins to the Middle Ages.

5) Museum of Ceramics

The Museum is housed in a late 19th century building and welcomes ceramic art and Sardinian artists of the 20th century.

Tools, plates, jugs and everyday objects tell the tradition of Sardinian ceramics, but also the history of the region.

6) Tribu Space (Francesco Ciusa Municipal Museum)

Consecrated rooms to the famous artist of Nuoro (1883-1949). His works reflect the most intense moments of his career, from the beginning of ‘900 to the end of 40’s years.

Physical accessibility for visitors who have specific needs. You can find a bookshop in it.
