San Simplicio Necropolis - Olbia

San Simplicio Necropolis - Olbia

The archaeological area of Tempio Necropoli di San Simplicio contains part of the dig carried out on occasion of renovation works for the area in front of the Basilica of San Simplicio.

The excavation, which brought to light some 450 Roman tombs, dating back from 200 BCE to 300 CE, represents the stratification of stages in extra-urban worship and burial grounds, covering the first 2000 years of history in the city of Olbia, from its founding by the Phoenicians to the Middle Ages.

This important archaeological site provides a tangible testimony of Olbia in ancient times and its uniqueness is related to the fact that the site is integrated in the layers of the modern town over the ancient residential area and its necropolis.

This fascinating site can be visited, with audio guide that can be used on your smartphone, also supported by information cards, or with the aid of a tourist guide or archaeologist. The duration of the museum visit is approximately 25 minutes.

The entrance is in Via Gabriele D'Annunzio and for all information, you can contact the Tourist Information Office in Olbia - Tel. +39 0789 52206 / +39 334 9809802; E-mail: info@olbiaturismo.it
